afternoon memorial at ft. hood, texas. they'll meet privately with relatives of those killed and then attend the memorial service at the post. that begins at 2:00 eastern today. officials say the suspect major nidal hasan will be tried in military court. no charges have yet been filed. the fbi is starting a new internal review to see if it missed any red flags. >> i guess no one saw the signs on him and if they miss the signs with him, can you imagine if they miss the signs with someone else? >> i think there were probably a lot of connections that should have been made that weren't made but we're at war and under a lot of pressure and maybe that's what happened. >> major hasan is in intensive care unit at the burn unit in san antonio. investigators say he acted alone and was not part of a terror plot. sources say he was never put on any watch list even though they

found e-mails between him and a muslim cleric, a radical cleric linked to two of the 9/11 hijackers. there was no mention of threat or violence in those e-mails. the u.s. senate offered its own tribute to victims at the ft. hood rampage. senators observed a moment of silence to honor those killed and injured. help is pouring in for victims of the ft. hood shootings. they call it a celebration of life made care baskets for them. they have food, stuffed animals, coloring books and cards and personal notes are attached. volunteers add items that the victims can use to pamper themselves. >> we want to put feel good stuff. hair products in there. there will be types of food items in there as well. comfort stuff. hopefully coloring books, stuffed animals, stuff like that for the kids. >> when you see this happening with all of the businesses and more importantly the community

directed jarvis to pour water on brewer. mendez started him on fire. two other teens have not yet been charged. brewer has burns over 65% of his body and remains in critical condition. >> you can come in each day or get a phone call at any time that things are getting worse and we're getting better. people get sick fast and better slowly. right now with him we're a tiny bit better every day. >> the boys attacked brewer because he reported that one of his friends stole his father's bicycle. the cbs news producer charged with blackmailing david letterman is in court today. joe halderman threatened to expose his affairs with the late-night staff if he didn't pay $2 million. a short while ago the defense attorney asked the judge to dismiss the case saying his client was trying to sell a

screen play. letterman made tv history when he confessed i slept with women that worked for him. the former astronaut accused of attacking another woman over an ex-boyfriend may take a plea trial today. the hearing is set to begin in 25 minutes. prosecutors say the deal has some conditions. they're not giving details. lisa nowak pleaded not guilty to attempted kidnapping and other charges. the woman she allegedly attacked in an airport parking lot two years ago is expected at the hearing today. the virginia governor will not stop the execution of convicted d.c. sniper john allen muhammad. governor kaine rejected a hearing for klemm .

>> if you have h1n1, you should be paid from your employer to stay at home. the idea is to make sure sick employees stay home and not expose other people. it would make it easier for parents to deal with sick children and school closings. house version would cover the h1n1 pandemic and other infectious diseases. in duchess county, new york, police are trying to figure out why a man walked into a school with a rifle and took the principal hostage. that school went into lockdown as police arrived at the scene. the gunman sunderrrenderisurren. no one was hurt. christopher craft attended the

school in the '80s. the gunman's son was recently suspended from that school. a suicide car bomber targeted a congested traffic circle killing at least 26 people near peshawar. people sat in traffic leaving cars mangled and several buildings destroyed. 60 people were injured. that's a third attack in the last three days in that same area. basketball great kareem abdul-jabbaar is being treated for a rare form of leukemia. his doctor said it's not a death sentence and treatable. abdul-jabbar is trying to raise awareness and give hope to others. he's using the opportunity to talk about the importance of health care. >> we have the best technology in the world. we're supposed to be the can do nation. our health care system really fails so many people especially poor people, people who don't

grieving families and a lot of people are wearing red, white and blue on this sunny day. the national rifle association wants to stop florida adoption agencies from asking couples if they own guns. the nra claims that the very question invades the privacy of gun owners. it violates a federal law that prohibits the state from registering guns. the child welfare department says gun ownership question is included on some but not all forms that parents fill out. there's legislation being introduced to block the question from being on forms. this is a your views topic for today. richelle carey joins us to talk about what you have to say. >> this comes from a couple that wanted to adopt a child. they had a form that had the question on it. they didn't like having to answer the question about whether or not they had guns and they thought about suing but

shooting rampage on post. not everyone who's there and there are hundreds perhaps even thousands there were actually at the site of the shooting. in fact, one woman whose husband is at ft. hood brought their 3-year-old daughter. her husband was at the shooting but what happens to my husband's brothers and sisters happens to all of us. the commander in chief, the first lady are there. the obamas will join grieving families and a shaken community at the post beginning in about 40 minutes. one of our i-reporters captured captured ida's giant waves. it's beautiful. jan took this video from her house right on the beach. some buildings lost their sea wall. we talked to her earlier and she said waves were getting bigger and bigger and the parking lots of high-rise condos on the beach

that memorial service for victims of the ft. hood shooting will be held today on the largest military post in the united states. there is the platform the presidential seal will be placed their shortly. the fbi and army and texas rangers continue to gather information on the attack. nidal malik hasan allegedly opened fire with two handgunsri deployment overseas. how will victims are honored today? >> reporter: we'll hear a roll call for victims and president

barack obama in his remarks today will honor each victim individually and other speakers today include lieutenant general cone and also general george casey. they'll be speaking. part of this memorial service today if we look inside you can see where the stage is set up. there's a large american flag draped in front of the building. people had been coming in. security is very tight, chuck. they have erected these storage containers around the perimeter of the field so that they can check every person coming in and they describe the security as like when you go through an airport screener. that certainly is at a premium right now even though this is a military installation because the president is here and other top officials are here. they want to make sure they have the highest level of security possible. chuck? >> okay. and how long will the ceremony occur? is it an hour long? do we have any idea what the

order of business will be? >> reporter: army officials estimate it will be about an hour long. they're going to hear the band play. there will be an opening prayer, scriptures from the bible will be read and you'll hear from two military officials and the president and shortly after that it is going to wrap up. we don't expect it to be very long. it will be traditional in tone but will also include some of the things that you see that are always official in the army including a 21-gun salute. the memorial will only be seen here today but it will also be heard as the 21-gun salute echos out across killeen, texas. >> have investigators spoke to major hasan from his hospital room in san antonio? >> reporter: we don't know for sure. we know that hasan has been able to speak. that news came this weekend when his ventilator was removed. this came recently from the hospital. he's in critical but stable

condition. there are reports that he has been working to some extent to obtain legal counsel. certainly gives you an idea of what might be ahead perhaps a military trial for this suspect. >> okay. last question. if you don't know that's fine but have you talked to people walking in? are there people who had no -- they were not witnesses to or even nearby what happened on thursday but they just want to be there? they want to show their support to the military family. are you getting that sense today? >> reporter: chuck, we're in an area that's not near the public. this is a special entrance i'm standing in front of here. i've talked to people in the community this weekend. i've been here for several days. i've been to a few church services and prayer services and the community is tense. they're looking for answers and we certainly talk about the healing process beginning and the army talks about moving on but this is hitting really deep in this community. even if people weren't directly affected by this, if it wasn't necessarily a family member or they weren't here on post at the

sort of a victim impact statement. >> are you the victim in this case? >> yes. >> is there something you would like to tell the court and ms. nowak about what happened to you. >> yes, there is. >> have you prepared a state? >> i have. >> you may read it whenever you like. >> thank you. your honor, first, thank you for the opportunity to speak today. my name is coleen shipman. as i just said. shortly after i turned 30 years old lisa nowak hunted me down and attacked me in a dark parking lot. her attack was part of a well researched, well planned and deliberate crime. now almost three years later i'm still reeling from her vicious attack and trying to put my laugh back together amidst terrible media scrutiny that lisa nowak brought down on me

first with her attack and later with her pr campaign. i knew in my heart when lisa nowak attacked me that she was going to kill me. it was in her eyes. a blood chilling expression of limitless rage and glee. it's my understanding that lisa nowak had researched murder, corpse dismemberment and disguises and trace evidence and i'm 100% certain that lisa nowak came here to murder me and i believe that she never thought she would get caught. she began preparing for her crimes weeks before she committed them. she researched my personal information. she entered my boyfriend's apartment and without his permission or knowledge she stole my contact information, my travel itinerary and several personal e-mails between myself and my boyfriend. she collect the my address, the

coordinates of my house, my cell phone number and my e-mail address and gathered evidence and torture devices which in her own words were too scare ky to think about but not scary enough to bring along on her attack on me. her claim she only wanted to talk to me is at best ridiculous. it is one of many lies she devised to gain sympathy from her friends and family and the american people. please don't be fooled. i was fooled. lisa nowak is very good actress. on february 5th, 2007, lisa nowak had ample opportunity to talk to me. she followed me inside the orlando international airport for hours. the i'm a very friendly person, your honor, who at that time would have welcomed her company over some hot chocolate while waiting for my suitcase to arrive. when i -- >> we're going to take a quick break. i hate to do that in the middle

i thought i escaped a car jacking and i'm sure she just tried to kill me to steal my car. i had no idea that a high paid high ranking military officer just escaped a horrible death that night. it was a nightmare and the nightmare continues in the media with suggestions that i lied or changed my story. my account of what happened the night that lisa nowak attacked me is the truth. and i never changed my story. lisa nowak did chase me to my car, she did force her way into my car. she tricked me into opening my window. she did reach through my car window with pepper spray and sprayed me directly with prerp spray. as lisa nowak attacked me, she was angry but she was well-composed and she moved with deliberate efficiency. the only thing her appearance and her countenance illustrates

is her despair from being caught red-handed. before she drove from houston to orlando to intercept me, she hit her intentions and her whereabouts, i believe, for the weekend from her co-workers. she chose to drive the 1,000-mile distance rather than fly which ensured no record of her trip. she traveled under a fake name wearing a disguise and making minimal stops and using only cash. she brought with her a myriad of weapons which one seasoned detectives called a murder kit. nowak told police that she planned to use the weapons that she brought with her to force me to sit with her. during her statements to police, she fretted over nasa finding out about her arrest but never once, that i know of, express any concern for her victim or remorse for the damage she inflicted on me. her only concern, it seems, since her crime has been for

talk about a lot of drama in a courtroom today for former astronaut lisa nowak and the romantic rival she's accused of attacking two years ago. nowak pleaded guilty to a lesser charge. talking burglary here and battery and attack on that romantic rival. that's lisa nowak who is charged. accused of attacking colleen shipman in the orlando airport parking lot two years ago after driving from houston. i have to tell you, it was a tearful shipman, really emotional, who spoke in court just a few moments ago. she said she is convinced that nowak came to kill her and says her life has never been the same since. >> lisa nowak did chase me to my car.

she did force her way into my car. she tricked me into opening my window. she reached into my car with pepper spray and sprayed me directly with pepper spray. as she attacked me on 5 february, 2007, she was angry. but she was also well-composed and she moved with deliberate efficiency. the only thing her appearance and her pathetic kouns nance in her mugshot illustrates is her despair from being caught red-handed in a crime she endeavored so hard to find. >> that was colleen shipman. she started dating nowak's love interest. this is, i believe, another witness who is testifying right now in some sort -- it's an attorney, excuse me, who's about to testify. we're going to keep monitoring

this for you behind the scenes. as soon as the judge comes up with a sentence, we will bring that to you. but right now, we also need to get to ft. hood, texas, where a solemn ceremony to honor the dead is about to begin. look at the folks who have come out to remember these people. president and mrs. obama, in fact, the governor of texas, the secretary of defense all also on hand to pay tribute to the 13 people killed on the post last week. here are some of the family members. those who are so intimately touched by this entire fiasco here. 12 died were in the military. another 29 were injured at the shooting spree at the sprawling military compound. you can see it on their faces and the way they're moving, how grieve grieved for their family members. president obama will offer remarks during the memorial service, as will army chief of

staff george casey. look at the people who have gathered to memorialize the people they loved, the people they worked with, their friends, their family members and, again, this is the family of one of the victims. you can see that empty pair of boots sitting there as well. i'm assuming there to symbolize the men and women lost and the pictures of two of the men there in the shot here. and now the rest of the pictures there of all of the victims, all 13 of the victims. the president and first lady have been here and they met privately with some of the survivors and the families of the victims just a short time ago. again, live pictures coming to you as these people really join together to try to comfort each other to get through this trying time. we're going to continue to monitor this throughout the day. our thoughts and prayers with the folks there and the family members. u.s. intelligence flight communications as we talk more about this, from the suspect in the ft. hood shootings.

a year ago, federal agents say nothing ever came of that investigation. they reviewed communication between major nidal hasan and a man identified as the subject of a federal investigation. i'm getting word that we need to get back to orlando. lisa nowak now apologizing to colleen shipman. >> i hope very much that we can all move forward from this with privacy and peace. thank you, your honor, for the opportunity to speak. >> anything else? >> no, judge. >> state? >> your honor, i would agree with mr. lykkebak that she did plead to burglary. but i disagree when he says this is just like any other case. this is not just like any other case. and this has nothing to do with the fact that ms. nowak is an

astronaut. it has to do with what she did and that's what makes it different from any other cases, that she planned this and thought about what she was going to do. she traveled all the way here from texas to do it. she used a fake name in a hotel. she went to -- she hid her car at a hotel. she went to the airport and followed ms. shipman around for hours, not just for a few moments but for hours having every opportunity if she wanted to talk to ms. shipman, she could have done so. but she didn't. she donned a disguise. she had this bag of stuff that who knows what she was going to do. she came up and followed ms. shipman to her car. she attacked ms. shipman with pepper spray and then got rid of that disguise in order not to be found in the parking lot. this is a very well thought-out and very well-planned attack by ms. nowak.

this is not your ordinary burglary. this is not where somebody was just trying to steal a car for a joyride. this was an attack on someone else over a perceived love triangle. so this goes a little bit further than just your regular, ordinary burglary. the state is asking the court to remember that and remember these facts and remember ms. shipman as she was talking. regarding sentencing in this case, the state believe that is she should do some kind of jail. if she doesn't do jail time, then at least five years of probation, mental health counseling, no contact with ms. shipman or bill oefelein. restricted travel not going to pennsylvania, alaska or california. and any investigation the orlando police department needs or restitution of amount.

this is still affecting ms. shipman today. and she may need future counseling and she should pay for that. when the court decides on the sentence in the case, we ask that you remember the fact, remember what happened, treat her as someone who's pled to burglary doing the things that she did and acting the way that she did back in february of 2007. >> anything further? >> no. >> your honor, i heard ms. shipman's statement, and i don't want to diminish the trite that she expresses. however, the facts of the case are that the burglary was accomplished by spraying arguably a small amount of

pepper spray which got into the window as the court knows. emts were called out. she didn't need any attention. she drove her car how many to brevard county that night. so the consequence, at least on february 5th of what happened in the parking lot were not observably severe. and i think that maybe the state's position is a little overly dramatic. i think that my client, because of who she is and because of what she's accomplished in her life was targeted a little bit by the police department here -- >> again, we're going to keep our eye on this for you. that's lisa nowak you see on the left-hand side of your screen as she awaits the judge's

sentencing to her pleaing guilty to battery with assault and to burglary in her attack of colleen shipman back in february of 2007. as soon as the judge brings that sentencing forward, we'll bring it to you. >> have you seen this video yet? what a nightmare? falling off a platform in a subway station into the path of an oncoming train. this is what happened to a woman in boston. you'll see the rest of the video with a surprising ending.

you are looking at live pictures from ft. hood. look at all of those people who have gathered together. president and mrs. obama are in that crowd, as are the governor of texas and the secretary of defense. you're looking at ft. hood, folks, in texas, paying tribute to the 13 people killed on the post last week. 12 of those who died were in the military. another 29 people were injured in the shooting rampage at the military compound.

we want to get you back to orlando right now. the judge is imposing a sentence on lisa nowak. >> you entered a plea of guilty. you have apologized to ms. shipm shipman, and i believe -- the court believes your apology is sincere. i've also looked at and considered the sentences that i've imposed on other defendants who were first offenders charged with the same offenses that you're pleading to. it's long been a mandate from our legislature and the court system that people be sentenced somewhat similarly to each other, depending upon the crimes charged. that's why we have sentencing guidelines. it's been almost three years since the events took place that created this nightmare for ms. shipman. and you are 100% responsible for that nightmare.

and i believe you've accepted that responsibility here today. therefore, it's the judgment and sentence of this court then as to counts one and counts three, counts one being the felony, burglary to a conveyance, i'm going to withhold adjudication in both counts. the reason i do that is because i can't remember -- to be candid with you -- adjudicating someone on a first offense for burglary of conveyance. i'm going to sentence you to two days in the orange county jail with credit for two days times served. place you on one year of supervised probation. i have no objection to you transferring your probation to the state of texas. i'll give you a 90-day travel permit but you must report to

probation no later than thursday at 4:00 to begin the transfer process. you're to do 50 hours of community service which you can bide at $10 an hour which must be completed in the first seven months of your probation. you're to have absolutely no k contact of any sort, and i mean any sort, with colleen shipman. that includes personal contact, third-party contact, other than i am ordering that you prepare and send to her through your attorney a letter of apology, a sincere letter of apology. not one of these vanilla things that i see from other defendants. it must be delivered to ms. shipman within ten days of today. there's to be no e-mail contact, no voice mail contact, no text messaging contact, no phone contact, no internet contact, no

contact of any sort. you are to stay totally away from her. you say you've completed a year and a half of counseling. i'm not going to order any additional counseling. i trust that you're under oath and you're telling me that your counseling was completed. now, all of this may affect your navy career. in fact, i'm sure it's going to affect your career in the united states navy and fair lly certai it's going to affect your retirement in the united states navy. but you brought this on yourself. and i don't have any sympathy for you in that respect. there's going to be $348 in court costs, $151 lien. is there a cost of prosecution? >> what about the anger management class, your honor? >> she's already gone through a year and a half of counseling.

that she had faked her name, she had driven rather than flying to florida from texas to attack colleen shipman. colleen shipman saying she's suffering migraines. one of the most powerful impact statements we've seen. they asked for jail time, no contact, five years probation. nowak got two days in jail. one year of supervised probation and one year of community service. no contact with colleen shipman in this case. that is lisa nowak's sentence. carrie prejean is speaking out about her alleged sex tape. why she says she's not a hypocrite.

that is former astronaut lisa nowak who's been sentenced now to one year probation in connection with the 2007 attack on her romantic rival. she also got one year of supervised probation and community service and a stern warning from the judge to stay away from her accuser, colleen shipman, for good. earlier nowak pleaded to a lesser charge of burglary and battery. she's accused of day tacking shipman in the orlando airport parking lot two years ago after driving from houston. there she is today. a tearful shipman spoke in court saying her life hasn't been the same since that attack. she says she's convinced nowak came to her kill. and shipman also called nowak a

phony. >> she gathered weapons and torture devices which in her own words were too scary to even think about but apparently not scary enough for her to bring them along during her attack on me. nowak's claim that she only wanted to talk to me is at best ridiculous. she devised them to gain sympathy. please don't be fooled. i was fooled. nowak is a very good actress. >> nowak apologized to shipman in court. you might remember shipman started dating nowak's love interest, bill oefelein. diapers, latex glove, other to my knowledges were found in nowak's car at the time. let's get you back to ft. hood, texas. the army right now, live pictures coming to you honoring those killed during a shooting on the post last week. president obama is among those attending the service. and samantha hayes is there as well. samantha, what are you seeing right now?

>> reporter: i'm just outside the secured entrance -- one of the secured entrances to the field where this is taking place. you've probably been watching what's been going on inside. needless to say, it's an emotional scene. we just watched as several of the survivors entered, many of them on crutches, a few with their arms in slings. and watching here today, we believe about 15,000 soldiers and people from the community and many, many people who, of course, work at post here. we're expecting to hear from three speakers this afternoon -- the commander of ft. hood, lieutenant general robert cone, general george casey of the army, and the president of the united states, barack obama. we understand -- the president remarks, he's going to talk about each of the victims and he met with the victims' families before this service got under way. christi? >> what do we know as we watch all of these people there to

memorialize their fellow comrades and their family? what do we know about the suspect in that case? he is still in the hospital, is he not? >> reporter: he is still in the hospital, christi. far away from here in san antonio where he is in stable -- critical but stable condition. but he is able to speak. i have some new information to share with you. he has obtained counsel, john galigan who spent 30 years in the army representing various members of the army is going to be his attorney. and galigan says he has talked to hasan. he believes that hasan understood him, to the extent that hasan has agreed to have him represent him. but he did not remark on his condition and apparently they did not talk about the case. so that's all the information we really have right now on the condition of the suspect, nidal hasan, who is suffering from four gunshot wounds. he was shot several times by, we

believe, two officers, police officers here on ft. hood who, no doubt, will be hailed as heroes during this memorial service today. >> we see the empty boots and the pictures of the victims. any word on how long this memorial will last? >> reporter: in total, christi, we expect it to last about an hour. we've heard music playing. we've heard several well-known hymns performed. the images are really touching. we see soldiers with their heads bowed and little children, one with a camouflage bib on that said, my dad is my hero, giving you indication of how close this community is. i've heard it described really as sort of a city within these secured bounds. and many people here, even if they don't have a direct connection to the shooting, have come to mourn the loss of these 12 soldiers and one civilian. >> and seeing all those people there, we know there's comfort in numbers.

hopefully they're finding it in each other today. thank you so much, samantha hayes. we appreciate it. help is pouring in for victims of the ft. hood shootings and their families. a nonprofit group in texas called celebration of love made care baskets for them. they have food and stuffed animals and coloring books, cards, personal notes attached. but volunteers are also adding items the victims can use to pamper themselves. >> we just want to put feel-good stuff. we'll have hair products in there. there's going to be food items in there as well, comfort stuff. hopefully like coloring books, stuffed animals, stuff like that for the kids. >> when you see this happening in one community and how austin is responding to this need right now, it makes me feel amazing. it's so great to be an american. >> volunteers plan to deliver all the baskets before today's memorial service. still talking about tropical depression ida because it is dumping a lot of rain on parts

of the southeast. some places could get 8 inches of it. the storm will likely continue for at least another day as it travels up the east coast. came ashore this morning at dauphin island, alabama. has flooded roads in alabama and the florida panhandle and caused scattered power outages in some areas as well. the governor of virginia will not stop the execution of this man. john allen muhammad is scheduled to receive a lethal injection at 9:00 p.m. eastern tonight. muhammad and a teenaged ayco accomplice killed ten people around the washington area in 2002. they're also expected of killings in other states as far away as arizona. malvo is serving life without parole. three florida teenagers accused of setting a 15-year-old on fire will be charged as adults. all three were charged yesterday with one count of aattempted second-degree murder. they're being held without bond.

investigators say 15-year-old matthew bent directed 15-year-old denver jarvis on the right there to pour rubbing alcohol on michael brewer last month. they say the one in the middle, jesus mendez, lit him on fire. prosecutors aren't charging two other teens they've been questioning. brewer has burns over 65% of his body and is still in critical condition. >> we can come in each day or get a phone call at any time that things are getting a lot worse or getting a tiny bit better. people get sick real fast. they get better slowly. right now with him, we're getting a tiny bit better every day. >> police say the boys attacked brewer because he reported one of his friends stole his father's bicycle. the bike was apparently stolen because brewer didn't pay one of the boys $40 for a video game. the cbs news producer charged with blackmailing david letterman is in court today. he threatened to expose

letterman's affairs with women on his staff if the star didn't pay him $2 million. halderman has pleaded not guilty. his defense attorney asked the judge to dismiss the case. he says his client was merely trying to sell a screen play. letterman made tv history when he confessed on his show he'd indeed slept with women who worked for him. president obama is now considering four options regarding how to handle the strategy for the war in afghanistan. the white house press secretary says the president plans to discuss those options with his national security team tomorrow. but he wouldn't reveal what they involved. general stanley mcchrystal has told the president the u.s. mission will fail unless he sends an additional 40,000 troops to afc. sources say the president plans to add more troops but probably not the amount mcchrystal is recommending. you expect fights to break out when you go to a men's hockey game, right? a girls' soccer match? things got ugly at the end of this high school championship

game. it didn't end there, though. wait till you hear what happened during the trophy presentation.

what's on the screen, that's a crime punishable by death. the movie theater closed after that. the good news is it's back open. the region, as you might know, as you're watching hln and we've told you about it for months, the taliban gained control of much of that area. so a strict version of islamic law banned music and movies. they were particularly against music inside of movies like what you're watching right there. the owner of the movie theater says what's strange is many of the fighters telling him to shut this thing down were his customers just a little while before. after a three-month military offensive there in the swat valley, pakistan's military was finally able to declare victory in july over the taliban. so the theater reopened two months later. now they show films, again, with big musical number that is people all love. one man says, we're having fun and what we want to do is now have more of that fun. of course, that all depends on if the pakistani security forces can keep the taliban out. by the way, that theater was built in 1964.

they still use the original projectors there and they were made right here in the u.s., actually on long island. so as i told you, there's a happy ending but a pretty scary beginning. >> no kidding. reggie, thank you so much. >> you're welcome. the issue of abortion could derail health care reform legislation in the senate. democratic senator and abortion opponent ben nelson of nebraska says he'll oppose any bill that provides federal money for abortions. house speaker nancy pelosi added restrictions on abortion funding in the house version to get it passed. but democratic senator barbara boxer calls that radical and says the house amendment is unfair to women. it prohibits abortion coverage in a government-run plan and in private plans that accept people paying with government subsidies. senate democrats will need nelson's vote and those of several other anti-abortion democrats to pass health care reform. we want to pose the question to you. do you think the government should restrict insurance coverage of abortions as part of any health care reform?

library, but that's a good block away from the school. a building that clearly seems to be fully engulfed in flames. no indication how this may have started. those look like perhaps temporary class buildings. all students have been accounted for. but the fire continues in southeast portland. president obama has just finished his remarked at the ft. hood memorial service. the president blamed twisted logic for the rampage that killed 13 people. he said there's no faith that justifies what happened. >> already mentioned those terrible minutes soldiers made makeshift tourniquets out of their claits. they braced gunfire to save the wounded. one young soldier, amber, was so

they have stood watching in blinding deserts and snowy mountains. they are men and women, white black and brown of all faiths and all stations. all americans. serving together to protect our people. while giving others half a world away the chance to lead a better -- >> to lead a better life. u.s. intelligence flight communications from the suspect, 39-year-old suspect in the ft. hood shootings about a year ago. federal agents say nothing ever came of the investigation. they reviewed communications between major nidal hasan and the man identified as the subject of a federal investigation. a radical cleric identified as al laki. that's where hasan attended services. he left the u.s. in 2002. he may be in yemen.

two-hour standoff. the state government official identifies the suspect as christopher craft, a man in his 40s who once attended the school. his son was recently suspended from the school. three florida teenagers suspected of setting a 15-year-old boy on fire will be charged as adults. all were charged with one count of attempted second-degree murder. 15-year-old matthew bent directed the the other to pour rubbing alcohol on michael brewer last month. then mendez lit him on fire. brewer has burns over 65% of his body and remains in critical condition. >> we can get a phone call at any time that things are getting a lot worse or a tiny bit better. people get sick real fast.

it's a school that has 460 enrolled students and it was in session. they have all evacuated to a library about a block away. all students accounted for. somebody before noon smell ad burning odor. people ran to the principal's office asking if it was a drill. they pulled the fire alarm. there are maybe two dozen or so firefighters. everybody is accounted for and okay. it looks like the fire a spreading along the roof line in this 85-year-old building. right now in texas the u.s. army is remembering those 13 people killed last week at ft. hood as relatives and friends and others stop and pay their final respects to the 13 lives lost. president obama and the army chief of staff participated. the first lady, michelle obama, texas governor rick perry.

defense secretary robert gates attending the service as well. the commander of the post reflected on the losses ft. hood has suffered in recent years. a place where soldiers feel secure. soldiers do what soldiers do best. they take care of each other in time of need. >> lieutenant general robert kohn, the commander at ft. hood. you see relatives pausing. some clearly overcome with grief. this is so fresh in their minds. the president and first lady met with survivors and families for probably 40, 45 minutes at least before the ceremony began today. other news from orlando, lisa nowak has pleaded guilty to attacking another woman over an ex-boyfriend. she won't be going to prison.

nowak gets a year probation. she made a deal with prosecutors. she changed her not guilty plea to guilty to felon burglary and misdemeanor battery. no wac recently faced attempted kidnapping. the woman she attacked in an airport parking lot two years ago gave detailed and emotional testimony at the hearing. she believeses nowak believed to kill her. bill clinton mote with senators during their weekly luncheon today. they said if they fail on health care the party will pay for it election day. the very thing that happened in 1994 when bill clinton and his wife failed in their health care bid and republicans took congress. the issue of abortion could derail health care reform legislation in the senate. ben nelson of nebraska says he'll oppose any bill that provides federal money for aborings. house speaker pelosi added restrictions on funding in the house version to get it passed.

the relationship of anthony sowell in cleveland and the niece of the cleveland mayor. she lived with sowell from 2005 to 2007. delaware nice told affiliate woio that sowell took good care of her and she never thought the smells in his house might be bodies. he's suspected of strangling 11 women, hiding their bodies in and around their cleveland home. two more families have learned their loved ones were inside that home. >> just told he that her body was intact. that's all. it's still devastating she died in this manner and was found in the backyard. >> the fbi says it's investigating if sowell may be responsible for unsolved killings and rapes as far as away as japan. he spent time there as a marine. i'm jane velez-mitchell. rocked by tragedy.

afghanistan, also in smaller ceremonies like this. on a grand scale like this, it really gives people around the country a moment to capture what it's like to be a soldier in this army after eight years of battle in iraq and afghanistan as well. really gives you a sense just how poignant and how important these ceremonies are to the men and women in the military here in the united states. obviously, president obama taking time to individually speak about each of the victims of last thursday's shooting, taking a moment to recount a little part of their personality, of their lives, the things that made them so special to their own individual families. president obama also, taking this as a moment, to reinforce all the soldiers the work they are doing is noble work. >> we come together, filled with sorrow for the 13 americans that we have lost. with gratitude for the lives
